I joined Success in November 2003, aged 26 with five years’ industry experience. I started on a six-month contract working out of the London office, looking after the Buying graduate desk as maternity cover. I absolutely loved the fast pace of the area and the fact that I was helping young graduates get on the career ladder. It was really rewarding – I knew this was the career for me and I haven’t looked back since! At the end of my six-month contract I stayed on in London for a month covering the senior-level Merchandising desk. This gave me the confidence to work at more senior levels and aided my transition to the Manchester office to start a Buying and Merchandising desk for the North and Midlands.
I recognised that clients in the north faced different challenges attracting the right talent due to their locations, and suggested that we needed a consultant focused solely on these harder-to-recruit geographical locations – but still working closely with our London office to attract the best UK talent. The desk was launched in June 2004 and was a great success. The following year I became pregnant with my first child and recruited Tracey Griffin, an ex-buyer I knew from Shop Direct and who had just returned to the UK after travelling the world with her husband. Tracey was on board by May 2005 and I started my maternity leave in July 2005, returning to the business in January 2006. Tracey then became a permanent member of staff and we have worked happily together ever since.
We have had some fantastic, buoyant times and some tough times too. When I was pregnant with my second child we made the difficult decision to close the Manchester office during my maternity leave. It was 2008 and the recession had hit the industry hard, so we took the decision to mothball Manchester for ten months, with all recruitment being handled from London. I returned in April 2009, the office reopened, and thankfully Tracey returned. Soon after, the office grew to a team of eight and we now have the most successful team we’ve ever had in our northern base. Recruiting all levels of Buyers and Merchandisers, Tracey and I have serviced our client base in the North and Midlands for the last 13 years, working together through the birth of our children (four maternity leaves in total), a brief office closure, several house moves, a serious illness, the recession, two 40th birthday celebrations and four prime ministers – and we are still going strong as the preferred B&M recruiters for retailers across the region.
